CHILD & FAMILY THERAPY
Concerning child therapy, it is important to assess at the outset whether it is more suitable to work with the child or adolescent individually or to work with the family. Children and youth often internalize stress that, in turn, presents as negative behaviours. Working with the family to determine what those stressors are is the first step in treatment planning for. Through counselling, parents can positively modify a child's environment by placing greater attention on attachment and being aware of what coping techniques they are modelling. When you modify a child's environment they have to change as a result. Family therapy often is quicker in the achievement of family goals particularly when a child has been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety or experience temper tantrums which are not age appropriate.
There are many cases where working individually with a child or adolescent is beneficial. I have extensive experience working with children and have worked with children who have suffered from trauma, grief and loss, depression and diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
